Learning outcomes: This two-week intensive summer course gives an overview of modern public and global health with all its current and upcoming challenges. The graduate-level (master’s and doctoral) course is es-pecially suitable for students in health sciences, and also those in related fields (e.g. in natural sciences, social sciences etc.), but it is equally open to all students who are interested in examining contemporary health issues from various, and perhaps novel, perspectives.
The course will outline current and near-future health challenges in the world that has just entered the third year of the global Sustainable Development Goals. Public health is examined from many points of view, from everyday grass root life to general sociocultural and global systems.
Fields of public health that are covered in more detail include population health statistics and trends (in Fin-land, Europe, globally), modern health promotion, aspects of progressive health policy, socioeconomic and cultural determinants of health, environmental health, specific topics in occupational health, public health of ageing populations, public health nutrition, and some other relavant topics. Plenty of real-life examples are taken especially from the recent public health progress and future challenges in Finland.
Modes of study: The curriculum includes, among other activities, many expert lectures, seminars, discus-sions groups, a hands-on computer lab session with real-life epidemiologic data, and a field visit to the top-edge University hospital facility in Kuopio. Students will prepare a course work in groups, and the output will be presented and discussed together during the closing-day seminar.
Study materials: Literature and readings (mostly online) will be provided prior and during the course. The students will get to use the UEF information and digital library services as part of their independent studies and readings during the course.
