Publishing of doctoral dissertations

After the doctoral candidate's faculty has given permission to defend the dissertation, it can be published. The dissertation can be published either in print, electronically or both. The University of Eastern Finland and many research institutes have publication series that publish doctoral dissertations. The dissertation must be published at least 10 days before the public examination. It is up to the candidate to make sure that the dissertation is available for viewing at the University of Eastern Finland Library by the deadline.

Having the dissertation printed is not compulsory. If the dissertation is published only in electronic format, the candidate should nevertheless deliver a paper copy for public viewing at the University of Eastern Finland Library. For more information about the electronic publishing of dissertations, please see the UEF Electronic Publications service.

If the dissertation contains previously published articles, it is the doctoral candidate's responsibility to ask from reprint permissions for these from the original publisher. Original publishers may have their own forms for this on their own websites. If such service is not available by the publisher, the library provides a reprint permission template (see below). In both cases, we encourage to ask for both reprint and electronic re-use permissions.
