Borrowing services

Borrowing

  • You can borrow books from all the campus libraries and the KUH Medical Library.
  • Borrow the books with the self-check machines or at the customer service.
  • E-materials are accessed on the library computers or via a remote access connection.
  • Staff members can make a Material delivery for staff members agreement with the library, in which case the library borrows the reserved items and delivers them to the office at the university/KUH.

Loan periods

  • Course books and KUH Medical Library's books have a loan period of two weeks. Other books have a loan period of four weeks. For e-books, the loan periods vary.
  • You can read reading room copies within the library premises. The reading room copies can be borrowed overnight or for the weekend.
  • The library sends a courtesy notice of an upcoming due date. You must always monitor the due dates of your loans! Even if you do not receive the courtesy notification, or if there is Internet downtime or technical difficulties, you are still obliged to pay the overdue fees.

 

Returning

  • You can return the borrowed books to any of the UEF Libraries regardless of which UEF Library you borrowed them from.
  • When the library is closed, you can return the books through the book drop hatches near the libraries' front doors on your own responsibility. The library staff will return the books on the next day when the library is open.

 

Renewing

  • You can renew your loans up to 10 times in UEF Finna.
  • If you are unable to renew a loan, it could be due to the following:
    • The loan has been renewed 10 times.
    • A reservation has been placed on the book.
    • You have 10,00 € or more unpaid fees.
    • Your customer information needs to be updated.
  • Loans of UEF and KUH staff are renewed automatically 10 times, unless the books have reservations on them.
  • You need to renew loans from the National Repository Library by yourself in the UEF Finna.
  • If there are issues related to renewing, please contact customer service.

 

Reserving

  • Make reservations on all the UEF Libraries' both available and not currently available books in UEF Finna.
  • Books available on shelves and travelling from one campus library to another have a delivery time of two working days.
  • If a book has been borrowed or is located in another UEF campus library, the reservation is free of charge.
  • In addition to potential reservation fees, notifications sent to a home address via post will always include a postage fee of 1,20 €.
  • Shelf fetch service fee for a book that is available at your own campus library is 2,00 €/book.
  • Reserving books and using the shelf fetch service is free of charge for staff members.
  • Reserved books must be collected within four working days of the notification. If you do not collect the reserved book, you will be charged a fee of 1,00 €/book. This applies also to staff members.
  • Pick up the book that you have reserved from the reservation shelf and borrow it.
  • Staff members can make a Material delivery for staff members agreement with the library, in which case the library borrows the reserved items and delivers them to the office at the university/KUH.
  • If there are issues related to reserving, please contact customer service.
  • If you want to reserve a book that is being processed in the acquisitions, please contact customer service or send e-mail to kirjasto.hankinta[at]uef.fi. Reservations can be made only on books that are going to be borrowable material at the campus libraries or the KUH Medical Library.

Reading room loans

  • Reading room copies are borrowed only overnight or for the weekend.
  • Reserve a reading room copy on a specifically marked computer or at the customer service.
  • Borrow the book at the customer service.
  • Return the book to the same campus library from where you borrowed it.
  • Legal deposit copies requested for reading room use cannot be borrowed outside the library..

    If a reading room copy is not returned on time:
    • The overdue fee is 2,50 €/book/day, max 14,00 €/book. This does not apply to staff members.
    • An overnight and weekend loan block that lasts for four months will be placed on the customer. This applies also to staff members.
    • Unreturned reading room copies will be invoiced on the fourth day from the due date.

Loan periods

  • You can borrow an overnight loan from customer service two hours before closing the library, and its loan period is overnight until 10.00 on the next working morning.
  • You can borrow a weekend loan from customer service four hours before closing the library, and its loan period is over the weekend until 10.00 on the next working morning.

Reserving from the National Repository Library

  • Make reservations on books available in the National Repository Library via UEF Finna. Already borrowed books are reserved via interlibrary services.
  • Reservation fee is 1,00 €/book. This does not apply to staff members.
  • Reserved books must be collected within four working days of the notification. If you do not collect the reserved book, you will be charged a fee of 1,00 €/book. This applies also to staff members.
  • You can renew your loans from the National Repository Library up to 10 times in UEF Finna.
  • No overdue fees are charged for National Repository Library books.
  • If you lose a National Repository Library book, you compensate for it to the National Repository Library
    • by providing a corresponding replacement book (same edition)
    • or paying the book's acquisition price + processing costs of 50,00 €.

Ordering legal deposit copies

The legal deposit collection includes print materials published since 1981. Information on the legal deposit copies published since 2008 can be found in the UEF Finna. You can place a shelf fetching request on the legal deposit material in the UEF Finna. If you cannot find a publication in the UEF Finna, you can fill in the Deposit copy request form and ask if it is available.

Delivery time of legal deposit copies is 2–7 days. A legal deposit copy is for you to use within the library's facilities as a reading room loan.

Staff members can pick up their legal deposit copy loans for research use or make a Material delivery for staff members agreement with the library, in which case the library borrows the reserved items and delivers them to the office at the university/KUH.

Article requests

  • We provide copies of e-journals and non-borrowable reading room material.
  • Copy requests are performed via this form or at customer service.
  • For staff members and students, the copies are delivered in PDF format, the service fee is 4,00 €/delivery.
  • For university departments, KUH departments and clinics, the copies are delivered in PDF format, the service fee is 3,00 €/delivery.
  • For other customers, the copies are delivered in paper format, the service fee is 0,60 €/copied page.
  • If a journal article is not available in our collection, you can make an interlibrary copy request.

Students and staff can make direct article copy requests to the National Repository Library (see the tab National Repository Library above).

Storage requests from Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Libraries

  • Information regarding storage material can be found in UEF Finna.
  • You can make a storage request as a shelf fetch request in UEF Finna, using this form or at customer service.

Feedback form

Feedback will be processed daily. Easily fixed issues will be solved immediately if they are essential to the service and in accordance with the operating policy. All feedback will be processed in the relevant services. If necessary, feedback will also be processed in the library's working groups. Feedback and the changes prompted by feedback will be processed annually by the management group in the management review.
